TL;DR: Mozilla is killing localization on Support Mozilla, overwriting articles written by humans with machine generated translations. Although Mozilla knows that their AI doesn’t localize or adhere to style guides, Mozilla is going live with it anyway. I thank locale leaders and localizers for their tireless efforts. Locale leaders seem to be obviated by AI, and Mozilla has nothing to say about it.
The shitty/distracting web run on ads, so why not making a search engine which index based on that? You would have an experience similar to what was the internet originally: no corporate shit, no infinite scroll, just independent websites made to share real informations and real knowledge, and would still leave space for subscriptions or donations! And you could still use JS and avoid just using a text browser, making the occasional order from a website or navigating the fediverse!
I had this idea recently: if people are willing to pay a small fee monthly for streaming services or Photoshop, surely some would also be willing to pay a similar amount for the FOSS they use. Even a few cents monthly would add up to quite a substantial sum over a vast userbase*. In light of this, I’ve started working on an app that records your app usage, and then at the end of the month splits whatever sum of money you want to donate amongst the apps in proportion to the time you spent using them.

For the past 21+ years of running Phoronix and even longer than that being a Linux user, I have loved and consistently promoted Intel’s open-source efforts and leading Linux support. Even through Intel’s difficult periods of delayed and stagnate hardware launches, what had remained consistent at the company and rather legendary had been their open-source contributions. From the Linux kernel to compiler toolchains and hundreds – if not thousands – of different open-source projects over the past two decades have been advanced thanks to Intel’s open-source leadership. It is with much sadness that my faith and confidence in Intel’s open-source leadership position is being questioned and questioning the direction they are now apparently steering their open-source focus/philosophy moving forward.
Today I was looking at some ways to get wikis for games that are very in depth offline for personal use. Wiki.js was one of the more prominent results so I looked into it. I did some research and I’m trying IrfanView, but it needs separate plugins for AVIF, WebP, etc. Nomacs’ last update was 2020. I’m going to try ImageGlass and XnView, but I wonder if there is some software that’s more widely recommended - like VLC, but for images.
I came across Shizuku as a root alternative, and while it’s been great at freezing apps, I want to disable certain receivers, services, and SDKs from apps.
Yes I know, Windows bad. But I have to use Windows for work and the snipping tool is just so slow, clunky, and unintuitive and I’m sick of using it. Any recommendations for screenshot utils that can be bound to hotkeys and work much better than the snipping tool would be much welcomed. I’m used to Spectacle on my own PC (CachyOS/KDE) which works wonderfully.

I use osmand on my phone for route finding and etc. It would be great to have the same program on my desktop, but its only for phones. For desktop, I haven’t found anything that quite satisfies. It seems like programs are oriented toward different goals like editing GPS tracks. I’m mainly interested in google maps ish functionality with route finding and map browsing, like osmand.

I’m moving away from using products by big tech and I recently started using EnteAuth for 2FA. Today I got an email from them saying that they received money as part of GitHub’s secure open source fund. Maybe I’m just being paranoid but I do not like this at all. Microsoft is not altruistic I don’t care what anyone says. There has to be an ulterior motive for this. With even the recent news that github won’t be so independent anymore and they’re getting folded into the Microsoft umbrella this has me worried. But let’s be real github was never independent just look at copilot being forced down everyone’s throat. That’s why I personally stopped using it.
